Alexis Kirke is a composer, filmmaker and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth. Having led a robust career in contemporary music, Alexis is branching out as an AI academic, expert and keynote speaker. When hired to speak at AI-related events, Alexis talks about the new era of AI, it’s conjunction with creativity, and also speaks on the application of AI in different disciplines such as screenwriting.

Alexis possesses a BSc in Mathematics and PhDs in Computer Music and Artificial Intelligence from the University of Plymouth. His illustrious career was set off as a Software Engineer for Instinet Incorporated, an organisation at which he later served as a Quantitative Analyst. Other notable positions he has held include Research & Development Manager at Neuvoice and Research & Development Manager at Invensys.

In 2010, Alexis served as a Research Fellow in Computer Systems for Expressive Music at the University of Plymouth, after which he took on the role of Senior Research Fellow in Computer Music at the University of Plymouth. It is here that he became a key member of the University’s Interdisciplinary Centre for Music Research. His music projects have garnered interest from BBC Radio 3 & 4, and World Service, Telegraph, The Guardian, and several other media outlets.

An ardent filmmaker too, Alexis’ work has often been showcased on BBC TV, NPR, Indiewire, The Verge, Al Jazeera and El Pais. Alexis was able to raise £2.4m from the UK Government for the national AI & Dementia Project, Radiome – a feat that few others can claim to have achieved. He is also undergoing training to write screenplays for BBC dramas under the BBC Voices Scheme, adding one more feather to his already rich cap.

With a string academic bent of mind, Alexis has published several articles on Algorithmic Composition and Performance. He is a 3-time TEDx speaker, having delivered indelible talks such as “Composing Across Parallel Universes”, “The Sonification of Lennon & McCartney” and “The Programmers Dance”.
