Andreas Dengel is the Executive Director of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science. A pioneer in AI, he co-founded the Institute of Document Analysis and Knowledge and is a world-leading expert on machine learning, pattern recognition, qualified learning, data mining, semantic technologies and document analysis. A highly influential figure in AI, Andreas has published 600 peer-reviewed journal articles and authored 14 books. At the forefront of innovation in AI, Andreas is a popular speaker who has spoken at prestigious institutions, including MIT, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Google Research and the London School of Economics.

Educated at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Andreas earned a degree in Computer Science with a minor in Economics. Building on his education, he enrolled at the University of Stuttgart to obtain a PhD in Computer Science. He began his career at IBM and later joined Siemens before serving as a guest researcher at notable organisations, including PARC, Xerox and Palo Alto. In 1993, Andreas was appointed a Professor for the Chair of Artificial Intelligence at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. During the same period, he became the Scientific Director of DFKI, responsible for the Smart Data and Knowledge Services. His second Professorship came in the Department of Computer Science and Intelligent Systems at Osaka Metropolitan University.

Having built a reputation for excellence in AI, Andreas has chaired several international conferences and sat on the editorial board of distinguished academic journals. In addition to founding the graduate school MIND at the Department of Computer Science, he has supervised over 500 doctoral, master and bachelor theses. He is also the author of Positive Learning in the Age of Information and Document Analysis Systems, among others. Moreover, Andreas is a Chairman of the Flexible Factory Partner Alliance, a Fellow of the International Association for Pattern Recognition, and a member of the German platform for AI Learning Systems and the National Academy of Science and Engineering.

As a preeminent authority on AI, he was appointed AI Ambassador for the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate. Andreas is also a highly sought-after advisor, having held advisory roles for prominent institutions, such as the Computer Vision Center at the University of Barcelona and the Centre of Excellence on Semantic Technologies at the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems. Recognised for his vast contributions to the advancement of AI, he was named one of the Most Influential Scientists in 50 Years of AI History in Germany. He also received the Order of the Rising Sun and the Order of Merit of the State Rhineland-Palatinate.
