Adam Rutherford is an acclaimed geneticist, science broadcaster and author whose work sits at the intersection of biology, technology and society. Renowned for translating complex scientific concepts into engaging, real-world insights, Adam is one of the UK’s leading voices on genetics, human evolution, artificial selection, race science and the ethical implications of scientific advancement. As a lecturer in Biology and Society at University College London, he explores how emerging scientific discoveries shape our understanding of humanity and influence decision-making across business, education and public life. Combining academic rigour with exceptional communication skills, Adam is regularly invited to speak on innovation, scientific literacy and the future impact of genetics and biotechnology.
Following the completion of his PhD in Genetics at University College London, where he investigated the role of the CHX10 gene in eye development and genetic disorders, Adam began a career dedicated to bridging cutting-edge research with public engagement. He spent ten years at Nature, one of the world’s leading scientific journals, serving as Podcast Editor and audio-video editor. During this time, he produced interviews with pioneering scientists and public figures, including David Attenborough, while writing editorials covering scientific breakthroughs, emerging technologies and science in popular culture. Alongside his work at Nature, Adam developed a successful broadcasting career, presenting BBC documentaries and science programmes including The Cell, The Gene Code and Inside Science. After leaving Nature, he continued to expand his influence in science communication, most notably as co-host of BBC Radio 4’s The Curious Cases of Rutherford & Fry with mathematician Hannah Fry, a programme that ran for 21 series. He later presented Bad Blood: The Story of Eugenics, examining the scientific and social consequences of one of history’s most controversial movements.
Adam’s contribution to science communication extends across publishing, broadcasting and public advocacy. His books include Creation, A Brief History of Everyone Who Ever Lived, Genetics, The Book of Humans, Humanimal, How to Argue with a Racist and Control: The Dark History and Troubling Present of Eugenics. Several of his works have been recognised by major literary and scientific awards, while his children’s book, Where Are You Really From?, won the Week Junior Children’s Book of the Year: STEM award and was shortlisted for the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize. He is also a regular contributor to The Guardian, an Honorary Senior Research Associate in Biosciences at University College London, a former President of Humanists UK and a recipient of the Royal Society David Attenborough Award. Beyond publishing and broadcasting, Adam has advised on film and television projects, helping ensure scientific accuracy across a variety of productions.
As a speaker, Adam offers a compelling perspective on how scientific progress is reshaping society. His presentations explore the technologies transforming our understanding of genetics, identity and human behaviour, while addressing the ethical challenges that accompany innovation. Whether discussing genomics, data-driven science, misinformation, artificial intelligence or the legacy of eugenics, he encourages audiences to think critically about the relationship between science and society. Drawing on decades of experience in research, media and education, Adam delivers intellectually stimulating talks that inspire curiosity, challenge assumptions and equip audiences to navigate an increasingly complex technological future. His TEDx talk, Rethink Everything We Know About Genes & Identity Politics, highlights his ability to tackle difficult topics with clarity, authority and relevance.
