Adrian Weller is the Director of Institutional Research at the University of Cambridge. He is also the Programme Director for Artificial Intelligence at The Alan Turing Institute, leading work on fairness, transparency, and privacy. A thought leader in machine learning and AI, Adrian examines the applications and implications of the pioneering technology on society. In his speaking engagements, he covers topics such as safe and ethical AI and examines scalability, fairness, privacy, and social policy.
Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Adrian earned a BA and MA in Mathematics at the prestigious university. After completing his studies, he landed the role of Trader at Goldman Sachs, specialising in fixed-income derivatives trading. He joined Salomon Brothers as a Trader in 1995, working on fixed-income proprietary trading, before joining Citadel as a Managing Director in 1999. Exiting the elite trading world in 2004, Adrian returned to academia to study for a PhD in Computer Science at Columbia University. Earning his PhD in 2014, he later joined Darwin College, Cambridge, as the David Mackay Newton Research Fellow.
Becoming a Senior Research Fellow in Machine Learning at the University of Cambridge, Adrian progressed to Principal Research Fellow and Director of Institutional Research, in recent years. Since 2016, he has served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence and a Turing Fellow, focusing on trust, transparency, and safe and ethical AI. An authority in AI, Adrian is closely associated with the Centre for Science and Policy and the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum Global AI Council and Global Future Council on the Future of AI.
A foremost expert in AI, Adrian sits on several boards, including the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation. In recognition of his contributions to the AI domain, he received an MBE for services to digital innovation in 2022.
