Sir John Sawers is one of the world’s most respected voices on artificial intelligence, cyber security and geopolitics. With a background that bridges science and statecraft, he brings rare insight into how AI is transforming security, diplomacy and corporate decision-making. Having studied physics and philosophy at the University of Nottingham, with further study at Harvard, John combines analytical precision with decades of experience at the heart of international affairs. His deep understanding of global risk and technological change makes him a trusted voice for business leaders seeking clarity in an age shaped by AI.

John began his career with the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) in 1977 before moving into diplomacy with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, serving in Yemen, Syria, South Africa and Washington. He became Foreign Affairs Adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair, helping to shape UK policy during pivotal moments such as the Kosovo conflict and the Northern Ireland peace process. From 2001 to 2003 he served as HM Ambassador to Egypt, later becoming Director-General for Political Affairs and then UK Ambassador to the United Nations. His leadership and strategic judgement led to his appointment as Chief of MI6 in 2009, a role he held for five years.

As Chief, John guided the Service through a period defined by digital transformation, cyber threats and the rise of AI-driven intelligence. He oversaw operations during the Syrian conflict and the 2012 London Olympics, modernising MI6 to meet the demands of an increasingly data-centred world. John was also the first Chief in over forty years appointed from outside the service’s senior ranks, reflecting his reputation as a visionary leader. His contribution to national security was recognised with the honours of KCMG and GCMG, and his emphasis on transparency helped redefine public trust in intelligence work.

Since leaving government, John has continued to influence global thought on technology and security. As Executive Chairman of Newbridge Advisory, which he founded in 2019, he advises corporate boards on AI adoption, geopolitical risk and digital resilience. He has also served as a Non-Executive Director at BP, Chairman at Macro Advisory Partners, and Visiting Professor at King’s College London. Today, John is a sought-after keynote speaker who explores how artificial intelligence is reshaping power, risk and leadership. His talks blend practical insight with global perspective, helping organisations navigate the balance between innovation, security and ethical responsibility.
