Karen Silverman

Karen Silverman is the CEO and founder of The Cantellus Group. Internationally renowned for her expertise in practical governance strategies for AI and other emerging technologies, she has established herself as the go-to advisor for Fortune 50 companies, governments, startups, and consortia. In a rapidly changing policy environment, Karen helps clients navigate the intricacies of governance for nascent technologies and delivers impactful speaking presentations to educate audiences on the latest industry developments.

Obtaining a stellar education at renowned institutions, Karen holds a BA from Wellesley College and a JD in Law from the University of California, Berkeley. She also earned a certificate in Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy from MIT Sloan Executive Education. Karen began her early career at McCutchen LLP, Jones Day LLP, and Paul Hastings LLP before joining the US Department of Justice as a Special Assistant to the Assistant General and Trial Attorney in 1990. After three years, she joined Jones Day as an Attorney, followed by Partner at Bingham McCutchen. In 1999, she became a Partner at Latham & Watkins, spending over two decades at the firm, working in global strategic and tactical management roles.

Recognised for her vast expertise in governance, ESG, crisis management and mergers and acquisitions, Karen was named one of the Top Ten Legal Innovators by the Financial Times. An internationally renowned Lawyer, she became the Outside General Counsel for HIMSS and founded The Cantellus Group In 2020. A preeminent authority in AI governance, Karen became a member of the Global AI Council, Global Innovator and Experts Network at the World Economic Forum. With distinguished knowledge of nascent technologies, she regularly contributes thought leadership articles on governance in the AI Journal and The World Economic Forum’s Agenda.

In acknowledgement of her contributions to AI governance, Karen was named a Top AI Lawyer in California and one of the 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics.
