Dr Mark Roseland, PhD, RPP, is an internationally recognised authority on sustainable development and artificial intelligence for community planning. With over three decades of academic and policy leadership, Mark has been at the forefront of integrating digital technologies, including AI, into the design of smarter, more resilient urban environments. As Professor of Sustainable Community Solutions and Senior Global Futures Scientist at Arizona State University’s Global Futures Laboratory, he applies machine learning and data-driven frameworks to help cities and organisations navigate the challenges of climate change, urbanisation and social equity.
Mark’s academic and professional background is distinguished by a unique blend of theory and practice. He holds a PhD in Community and Regional Planning from the University of British Columbia and has served as Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, where he also led the Centre for Sustainable Development. Earlier in his career, he worked as Chief City Planner in Metro Vancouver, contributing to the implementation of forward-thinking urban policies that still influence city governance today. Increasingly, his work focuses on the intersection of AI and sustainability, incorporating predictive analytics, AI-supported decision tools, and smart infrastructure systems to enhance sustainable planning outcomes.
A leading voice in both academic and professional circles, Mark is the author of the influential book ‘Toward Sustainable Communities’, now in its fifth edition, which introduces the Community Capital Compass – a strategic framework for integrating environmental, social and economic priorities using advanced digital tools. He has been honoured as one of Vancouver’s Top 50 Living Public Intellectuals, and has received the SFU President’s Award on Leadership in Sustainability and the SFU Sustainability Network Award for Excellence in Research on Sustainability. In 2023, he founded Pando | Sustainable Communities and launched the Community Capital Lab, initiatives that promote innovation through AI and data-informed collaboration.
Mark is a dynamic keynote speaker who presents globally on topics such as AI-enabled urban governance, community resilience, and the role of emerging technologies in sustainability. Whether addressing government agencies, academic institutions, or corporate leaders, he offers compelling insights that bridge cutting-edge research with real-world implementation.
