Michael Foale is widely recognised for experiences that are genuinely beyond the ordinary. A former NASA astronaut and one of the most accomplished spacefarers of his generation, he accumulated more time in orbit than any other US astronaut of his era. A veteran of six missions, he built a reputation as a calm, highly capable operator in the most demanding of environments. Today, he is engaged as a speaker for corporate and public audiences who seek first-hand insight into space exploration, advanced technology and the future of human-machine interaction.
His journey began in the United Kingdom, where he studied Physics and Natural Sciences at Queen’s College, Cambridge, before completing a Doctorate in Laboratory Astrophysics. He subsequently joined the NASA Johnson Space Centre as a Payload Officer in Mission Control and was selected for the astronaut corps soon afterwards. His early missions encompassed scientific research, complex rendezvous operations and international collaboration. During one mission, he averted disaster on the Mir station by isolating a damaged module after an unexpected impact, demonstrating composure and problem-solving under extreme pressure.
Michael went on to become the only NASA astronaut to complete extended missions on both Mir and the International Space Station. He contributed to a succession of major Shuttle and Soyuz flights and later held senior technical and leadership roles, including Assistant Director of the Johnson Space Centre, Chief of the Astronaut Office Expedition Corps and Deputy Associate Administrator for Exploration Operations. He was appointed Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institute of Physics, founded Foale Aerospace, supported the International Space Schools Education Trust and was inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame. After retiring from NASA, he turned his focus to green aviation and electric aircraft initiatives.
What distinguishes Michael as an AI and technology speaker is his rare combination of deep aerospace experience and long-standing engagement with artificial intelligence. He has been coding neural networks since the nineties and has applied AI to flight safety, drone delivery, audio fault detection and lunar surface assessment. His company has won multiple innovation prizes in these fields, and he is currently developing a specialised language model for anomaly detection in aircraft and gliders. This blend of operational credibility, technical rigour and visionary thinking enables him to communicate the transformative potential of AI to both expert and general audiences, making him a compelling contributor to events focused on the future of aerospace and intelligent systems.
Michael Foale is regularly booked to engage audiences at events, read their latest feedback below:
“Very, very occasionally I get to meet someone whose life experiences are so extraordinary, so different and, accordingly so interesting that I am immediately drawn into asking question after question about topics, the answers to which can help change the world I live in. So it was when I had the privilege of scoring a meeting with Michael Foale, six times astronaut. That’s a record, and he’s a Brit which are two reasons to be in awe.”
