As the Head of Data & AI Ethics for Lloyds Banking Group, he holds a pioneering position within one of the UK’s largest banks. Paul is a trusted advisor to C-suite executives on IT program execution, leveraging his extensive experience in this field. Educationally, Paul is well-prepared with a BSc in Computer Science, an MSc in Advanced Computer System Design, and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Manchester. His career trajectory includes key roles where he demonstrated his thought leadership and expertise in constructing high-performance systems that leverage big data. His journey in the banking sector started at ABN AMRO Bank as the Head of Credit Risk Systems, followed by a significant stint as the Programme Manager of Risk, Banking, Treasury & Trade Finance at Standard Bank.

In 2007, Paul took on the role of Head of Derivatives Product Control at HSBC, eventually becoming the IT Project Manager for HSBC’s Finance Transformation Programme. Here, he led the development of a centralised Finance Accounting Rules platform for the banking giant. His career also includes roles such as Climate Risk IT Program Manager at HSBC, IT Director at Commerzbank and Credit Suisse, and in 2021, as an AI Ethics Principal Researcher at Fujitsu Research of Europe, where he addressed issues of bias and discrimination in AI systems.

Paul’s work in developing AI systems and shaping AI policies, principles, and regulations has established him as an industry leader. Now, Paul is available for speaking engagements at events focusing on AI, technology, strategy, and business. His role in setting global standards for ethical AI, through participation in international forums and policy discussions, highlights his influence and vision.
