Philip Johnston’s Biography:
Philip Johnston is the Co-Founder and CEO of Starcloud, a frontier technology business tackling one of AI’s most urgent constraints, energy. Founded in 2024, Starcloud is building data centres in space, recently launching the first NVIDIA H100 chip into orbit. Under Philip’s leadership, the company has raised $34 million and secured backing from Y Combinator, In-Q-Tel, NVIDIA, Sequoia Scout Fund, A16z Scout Fund and the World Economic Forum, positioning Starcloud at the centre of the global AI infrastructure debate.
Before Starcloud, Philip was Co-Founder, Co-CEO and Board Chair of Opontia, where he helped raise the largest Series A round in the region at $42 million. He scaled the business to over 100 employees and led multiple acquisitions, establishing Opontia as the leading digital brands aggregator across Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. This phase sharpened his expertise in scaling operations, capital strategy and cross-border leadership.
Philip’s early career combined finance, policy and technology. He began work at Goldman Sachs before joining the United Nations, where he managed the distribution of over $100 million in grants across sub-Saharan Africa and led diplomatic missions to the World Bank, IMF and national delegations. He later became a Vice President in algorithmic trading at BNP Paribas CIB, developing deep technical fluency in quantitative systems and risk.
He went on to work in venture capital at Knife Capital and Blue Haven Initiative, focusing on impact investing and emerging technologies, before moving into strategy consulting at McKinsey & Company. There, he advised national space agencies on satellite programmes and became known internally as a confident speaker, even planning and MCing McKinsey’s first stand-up comedy event for 250 colleagues.
Alongside his executive career, Philip has consistently taken on leadership roles in education. He served as Student Body President at Harvard Kennedy School, speaking for 1,200 postgraduate students, and was a Teaching Fellow in Entrepreneurial Finance at Harvard.
